From Danger to Honor” “The Courage That Saved the Nepal Bank limited ”
Dear friends ,
My story begins during one of the darkest and most turbulent periods in Nepal’s history—the time of the Maoist insurgency.
Fear had spread across the country. Kidnappings, killings, attacks, and violence had become part of everyday life. Police stations and army posts were being attacked, and banks were increasingly becoming targets of armed groups seeking money and valuables. People lived with the constant fear that danger could arrive without warning.
At that time, my father was working as an Assistant Manager at Nepal Bank Limited in Lahan. He lived in a small quarter near the bank with one of his colleagues. My Kancho Kaka, my father’s younger brother, was also working nearby as an officer at the Nepal Electricity Authority in Golbazar.
One seemingly ordinary day, everything changed.
While my father was at the bank, he received alarming information: the Maoists were planning to attack and rob the bank.
At that moment, my father was effectively in charge because the bank manager was away on leave.
He immediately understood the seriousness of the situation.
He called the security guard and instructed him to remain alert. He stayed focused, watching carefully for any sign of danger. But as the threat drew closer, he realized that there was little time left.
His greatest concern was the bank vault.
A bank vault is not an ordinary room. It is a heavily fortified and secured structure designed to protect the bank’s cash reserves, gold, and other valuables. It is extraordinarily strong and extremely difficult to break, destroy, or move.
My father quickly took the keys to the vault and lockers.
Then the attackers arrived.
The Maoists reached the bank, captured the guard, and began searching for my father. Their presence created panic and terror. People were being threatened, and violence was unfolding around him.
My father knew that if he were captured, there was no guarantee that he would survive.
So he disappeared into hiding.
For hours, he remained concealed while the attackers searched for him. Outside, darkness slowly covered the town. The sound of guns and explosions echoed through the night.
My father could hear them.
Every sound reminded him that the danger was still close.
He remained silent and waited.
When night became deep and the surroundings grew darker, my father finally made a desperate decision. He knew he could not remain there forever. Taking whatever courage he could gather, he climbed toward the bank wall and jumped over it.
The escape was not without a price. He injured himself while jumping, but he did not stop.
Somehow, despite his injury and the danger surrounding him, he managed to make his way to his brother’s house.
That night, the Maoists continued searching desperately for him.
From the safety of the house, my father could still hear the terrifying sounds of gunfire and explosions. He was frightened, as anyone would have been. Yet he had managed to protect the bank’s most valuable assets and, above all, had escaped with his life.
The attackers could not break open the vault.
They could not take the bank’s reserves.
And they could not destroy what my father had worked so desperately to protect.
The following day, my father decided that it was no longer safe for him to remain in Lahan. He made his way to our home in Biratnagar.
When he finally arrived, we were overwhelmed with fear and relief. We had spent those hours not knowing what had happened to him. Seeing him return safely was an indescribable moment for our family.
Several days later, his seniors learned about everything that had happened—the attack, his decision to protect the bank, the way he secured the vault, and the courage he showed while escaping under such dangerous circumstances.
His bravery was formally recognized, and he received a lifetime appreciation award for his service and courage.
Even today, my father tells us the story with pride.
For our family, however, it is more than a story about a bank or an award.
It is the story of a man who found courage in a moment when fear surrounded him—a man who stood responsible for something greater than himself and refused to abandon his duty, even when his own life was at risk.
That night, behind the walls of a bank surrounded by danger, my father faced one of the most frightening moments of his life.
And he survived it with courage.
